With our population growing fast, low incomes and expensive local food, healthy cooking has become increasingly hard.

Our Nutrition centre is a hive of activity. There are daily nutrition classes were our youth can learn to cook a healthy meal and eat what they make. The staff prepare lunch for WSB, visitors, workshop participants and anyone who wants a delicious meal. Normally the menu is a soup, salad and island kakae (local food) with fruit salad for desert. There is only a limited amount of food so it’s best to ring in and reserve your meal!

The nutrition centre also offers one to one counselling for people with diabetes. Many people find it hard to control their blood sugar level, and have little understanding of what foods may affect them badly or how to cook food that it good for them. The nutrition team have successfully provided that advice to many sufferers.

The team has also been making special food for children in the areas badly affected by cyclone Harold in April 2020. Malnutrition is a big worry especially amongst children and the nutrition centre is trying to develop foods that will last and provide much needed nutrition following tried and tested recipes.

We also offer outside trainings and workshops for people wanting to learn about healthy cooking. These have included community groups, sports teams and detainees.

Round the back of the nutrition centre is our garden where the youth take part in agriculture classes, learning to make compost and grow seedlings.
